TRAINING METHODS

Kihon – Basics

This training method is done virtually every class. Before any combination can be successful, each individual technique must be strong. Repetition and thoughtful training are paramount. Like sports and skills, expertise will only result from diligent practice.

To consider repetition as tedious is to inhabit your attitude and thereby retard your progress. You must study hard.

Ippon Kumite (yakusoko - kumite)

Literally means one step sparring and the essence of this training is timing and distance. Simply put, one partner attacks while the other counter attacks.

An attack could come from a step through oizuki or mae-geri off the back leg and it is important that this attack be strong and determined in order to benefit your partners training.

The counter attack will be designed by the instructor. Here, as in all of the following methods, your timing, distance, stance and focus are of the utmost importance. DO NOT LET CONCENTRATION WANE.

Ippon Kumite is performed in the same area, do not move around the Dojo

Nidan Henka

This training is executed with the same format as Ippon Kumite. The difference being both sides counter attack. This means partner A attacks, oizuki and partner B counter attacks with partner A blocking that attack then applying a suitable response.

Limited Technique Sparring

Free movement in Dojo applying a designated technique. Counters are applicable and either side may attack. This, of course, is a practical application of your karate skills. You must sufficiently study this.

Free Sparring

This concept is obvious. For this training, all techniques of attack and counter as well as sparring strategies are applied. Usually this training is for 5th Kyu and above.
