Kata is a series of techniques performed against imaginary multiple oponents, used in karate to develop not only fighting technique but also fighting spirit. In kata the total performance must be visualised, the imaginary opponents must be made real and each technique carried out with an intensity and commitment that demonstrates one hundred percent effort. It is through kata that the karateka can realise their full potential without having to check his/her blows A kata that truly combines mind and body elevates the practice of karate into a true art form. Well performed kata should show uninterrupted focus, strong gaze (to eye level unless specified otherwise), solid stances and fluid movement.
